BEFORE YOU TRAIN

PAT is six different decisions on one clock.

The official section contains six spatial-reasoning families. A section-wide average is 40 seconds per item, but forcing every item into exactly 40 seconds is poor pacing: some visual comparisons should be fast, while multi-step folds or views deserve more deliberate work.

Official convention

Apertures, Paper Folding, and Cube Counting use five choices. View Recognition, Angle Discrimination, and Spatial Relations use four. DAT TRAIN preserves those family-specific counts.

Current DAT TRAIN beta scope

The guide teaches the complete official rule set. The present generated bank is narrower: Apertures use principal orientations, TFE asks for front or end views, Paper Folding uses axis-aligned half-folds, and Spatial Relations uses one validated cube-net family. These limits remain visible until broader generators pass the same correctness gates.

Accuracy before compression

Write or say a repeatable method during untimed review. Speed up the method—not a guess.

Eliminate with evidence

Name the violated dimension, crease, adjacency, or face count. “Looks wrong” is not reviewable.

Separate miss types

Knowledge, visualization, diagram-reading, and pacing errors need different remedies.

Apertures

YOUR TASK

Choose the one exact opening through which the object can pass completely.

OFFICIAL RULES THAT CONTROL THE ITEM

The object may be turned before entry, including toward a side not shown. After entry begins, it cannot turn or twist. The object and openings use a common scale, and only one aperture is correct.

Repeatable method

  1. Inventory the object’s extreme width, height, projections, and any notch that must survive in silhouette.
  2. Mentally place one plausible face toward the opening; do not judge only the pictured orientation.
  3. Check the entire boundary. A choice fails if one arm, corner, or indentation cannot clear.
  4. Use dimensions last: an otherwise matching outline can still be too narrow or short.

Common traps

  • Matching one local feature instead of the full silhouette
  • Rotating the object after it has entered
  • Ignoring a hidden symmetric indentation

View Recognition

Top–Front–End

Infer the missing orthographic view from the other two views.

Top is always upper left, front lower left, and end lower right. Views have no perspective. Hidden edges are dotted. The missing drawing may be top, front, or end.

Repeatable method

  1. Name the shared axis between each pair: top↔front share width; top↔end share depth; front↔end share height.
  2. Project distinctive corners and height changes across aligned views before studying small lines.
  3. Decide whether each candidate edge is an outside boundary, visible step, or hidden feature.
  4. Eliminate any option that violates even one shared dimension; then reconcile the remaining internal lines.

Common traps

  • Treating the drawing as perspective
  • Moving a feature to the wrong depth row
  • Turning every interior line into a visible edge

Angle Discrimination

Angle ranking

Rank four angles from smallest to largest.

OFFICIAL RULES THAT CONTROL THE ITEM

The ray length, placement, and orientation do not change the angle. Judge only the opening between the rays.

Repeatable method

  1. Ignore ray length and rotate the four openings mentally toward one common baseline.
  2. Find the clearest smallest and largest first; this often reduces the order to one close pair.
  3. Compare that pair near the vertex, where a tiny angular difference is least distorted by ray length.
  4. Check that the selected sequence lists the printed angle numbers—not their screen positions.

Common traps

  • Choosing the angle with shorter rays
  • Comparing endpoint distance instead of opening
  • Reversing the requested small-to-large order

Paper Folding

Hole punching

Predict every hole after the folded paper is completely unfolded.

Broken lines show the original paper; solid lines show the retained folded paper. The sheet is never turned or twisted and remains inside the original square. Multiple folds precede one punch.

Repeatable method

  1. Read the folds forward once, tracking which piece of paper remains visible after each arrow.
  2. Start at the punch and undo only the final fold. Mirror the hole by the same perpendicular distance across that crease.
  3. Undo the next fold by reflecting every hole now present—not just the original punch.
  4. Check symmetry, crease distance, and hole count. Overlapping reflections can reduce the naive 2ⁿ count.

Common traps

  • Unfolding in the original order
  • Reflecting across the wrong crease
  • Assuming every fold always doubles the number of distinct holes

Cube Counting

Painted cubes

Count cubes with a requested number of painted faces.

OFFICIAL RULES THAT CONTROL THE ITEM

Equal cubes are cemented together, then painted everywhere except the bottom resting surface. Hidden cubes exist only when needed to support cubes above. Zero is never the keyed answer.

Repeatable method

  1. Reconstruct the stack by columns and add every hidden support required beneath an upper cube.
  2. For each cube, count exposed top and side faces; never count the bottom resting face as painted.
  3. Use a five-column tally labeled 1–5 and record every cube exactly once.
  4. Confirm that the tally total equals the total number of visible plus required hidden cubes.

Common traps

  • Forgetting a support cube
  • Painting the bottom face
  • Counting the same cube from two visible sides

Spatial Relations

Pattern folding

Choose the solid that can be produced from the flat pattern.

Folding preserves face adjacency, edge connections, and the orientation relationship among markings. Faces cannot overlap or pass through one another.

Repeatable method

  1. Choose one anchor face and identify the faces that touch each of its four edges.
  2. Determine opposite faces. Opposites can never appear together at one visible corner.
  3. Track one distinctive mark or edge around the fold to preserve handedness and orientation.
  4. Reject impossible options one relationship at a time instead of trying to animate the entire solid at once.

Common traps

  • Putting opposite faces at one corner
  • Preserving symbols but reversing left/right order
  • Treating a diagonal contact as an edge adjacency

A practical two-pass policy

  1. First pass: Apply your normal method. If no defensible path appears after a brief attempt, eliminate what you can, choose provisionally, mark it, and move.
  2. Checkpoint: At each family transition, compare remaining time with the work ahead. Adjust globally—not after every individual item.
  3. Second pass: Return to marked items in order of expected payoff. A close two-choice decision is usually more valuable than rebuilding a completely opaque item.
  4. Final minute: Fill every blank. The official guide states that guessing is not penalized.

FULL DAT STRATEGY

Build retention first. Add test pressure second.

A good plan changes according to evidence from your attempts. It is not a fixed number of videos, chapters, or hours.

Total administration time is 5 hours 15 minutes. The scheduled break comes after Natural Sciences and PAT.

The evidence-based study loop

Map

Start with the current ADA specification. Turn every listed domain into a checklist so familiar topics do not hide untested gaps.

Retrieve

Close the notes and answer from memory. Practice is a learning event, not merely a score report.

03

Correct

Review immediately enough to repair the reasoning. Record the cause: missing fact, wrong method, diagram error, or pacing decision.

04

Space

Return to misses after time has passed. Increase the interval when recall is strong and shorten it when the method is still unstable.

Mix

After a short blocked foundation, mix confusable topics so the question—not the worksheet heading—must tell you which method to use.

Simulate

Add strict section timing only after the underlying method is dependable. Full forms train endurance and transitions; they do not replace review.

FLEXIBLE SIX-STAGE TEMPLATE

Use stages, not rigid calendar promises.

Move forward when the evidence supports it; keep weak objectives in spaced review while new material enters.

  1. Baseline: Take short untimed samples and inventory the official domains.
  2. Foundation: Learn one small objective, work an example, then retrieve without notes.
  3. Repair: Rework misses and create compact prompts from the reason—not merely the answer.
  4. Interleave: Mix nearby objectives and PAT families after each has a basic method.
  5. Time: Add section-length sets and realistic calculator/navigation constraints.
  6. Rehearse: Use full forms sparingly, review them deeply, and protect sleep and routine before test day.

Remove avoidable surprises.

Before the appointment

  • Read the current Candidate Guide again; policies can change.
  • Use the official Prometric tutorial so navigation is familiar.
  • Confirm that the name on the application exactly matches the required IDs.
  • Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment.

During the exam

  • Use the optional tutorial to settle into the interface.
  • Answer every question; guessing is not penalized.
  • Remember that the digital calculator shown in the guide is for Quantitative Reasoning.
  • Use only the scheduled break for normal locker, food, and drink access.
Do not convert DAT TRAIN percentages into DAT scores.

Official DAT scores are psychometrically equated and reported from 200 to 600 in 10-point increments. A raw practice percentage is useful for diagnosing objectives and pacing, but it is not an official score estimate.
